Hello again,
Today we were lucky enough to share an hour with a published author! Ms. Heather Vescent was gracious enough to answer our questions and relate her journey. She shared her experiences writing in several genres, such as poetry, micro blogging, and screenplays.
Most impressive was her detailed walk through of how she performs research in technical writing. How many times has a teacher asked you to do research? How many times have you actually tried to deep research? These are called "deep dives" and "down the rabbit hole". The joy should be in the discovery. These pursuits release dopamine, the reward chemical. The more you practice, the stronger the connection grows in your mind between the experience and the performance.
So, thanks to Heather, we can reaffirm our approach. Read, research, write, and edit. This process grows your mind, grows your character. You'll see the world differently. For creative writing, get out and view the world, even if it's just a tree in your yard. Take a long look at it as if your wanted it to paint it later with words.
Heather also told us to look to the future. Be alert. Who is trying to influence you? What messages are you seeing because you visited certain websites, watched certain videos? Large corporations, Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft (Xbox), Sony, want your attention because they want your money. How smart are you? Do you know when you're being watched? Do you know when you're being manipulated? Search engine optimization algorithms will steer your attention to portals that want your cash. Choose wisely!
So, we're inspired and grateful for an opportunity to leap into the world of a published author and futurist. Let's see where the rabbit hole takes us!
